51. Yough Glades Elementary School

Introduction

The Yough Glades Elementary School is a one acre enhancement of existing emergent wetland.  This site was previously a school permittee wetland mitigation.  While it had been used for education, it was in need of enhancement.  This wetland is located within the Little Youghiogheny River (05-02-02-02) watershed of Garrett County.

Construction

This project was completed in Fall 2005 with coordination between the Maryland Department of the Environment, the school, and Garrett Soil Conservation District.

Status

While some of the area is too dry, the majority of the site has developed into a successful wetland and provides valuable wetland functions to the landscape.  Using the newly developed Mitigation Site Scoring Method, MDE gave this site a score of 83/100.  Since this project is on school property, access is restricted. Click here to see an aerial photo and location information.
