Governor’s Press Release

ANNAPOLIS, MD (June 26, 1998) -- A stormwater management project to improve water quality in Longwell Branch in Carroll County received financial assistance Wednesday thanks to Board of Public Works approval of a $20,000 grant. The improvements will start at the headwaters of Longwell Branch which begin near Manchester Road.

The project involves reinforcing the bank with rocks and vegetation to curtail streambank erosion and will benefit the stream by reducing sediment pollution while improving habitat.

"Controlling stormwater runoff is important for flood protection as well as the health of our waterways," said Governor Parris N. Glendening.

In addition to the State grant, the county has contributed $19,500 and the federal government has contributed $23,250. Construction will begin in July 1999 and will be completed in November 1999.

"The Carroll County Commissioners support the proposal for the Longwell Run Headwater Restoration project," said County Board of Commissioners President Richard T. Yates and Vice President W. Benjamin Brown in a written statement. "This proposal will continue efforts to restore the Longwell Run watershed by reducing the erosion of the headwaters of the stream caused by peak stormwater flows.

Chaired by Governor Glendening, the Board of Public Works also is comprised of Comptroller Louis L. Goldstein and Treasurer Richard N. Dixon. The Board is empowered by the General Assembly to approve construction and consultant contracts, equipment purchases, property transaction and other procurement actions.
