Governor’s Press Release

ANNAPOLIS, MD (November 10, 1998) -- A project to design and construct a new water source, water treatment plant, distribution system and storage tank that will replace the deteriorated Braddock Water System in Frederick County, received Board of Public Works approval today for a $750,000 grant.

"Safe drinking water is critical for the health of all communities," said Governor Parris N. Glendening. "This project will enable Frederick County to provide an adequate and reliable water supply for approximately 900 residents of Braddock Heights."

The existing system was previously operated by the Braddock Water Company until their franchise was revoked by the Maryland Public Service Commission. The customers of this system are provided safe drinking water by Frederick County. Construction on the project began in September 1998 and is expected to be completed in May 2000.

"I am very pleased to see the State assistance in this project," said Mark L. Hoke, president of the Frederick County Board of Commissioners. "It further demonstrates that local and State government can work together to reach a desired end and we're pleased for the people of Braddock Heights."

Chaired by Governor Glendening, the Board of Public Works also is comprised of Comptroller Robert L. Swann and Treasurer Richard N. Dixon. The Board is empowered by the General Assembly to approve construction and consultant contracts, equipment purchases, property transactions and other procurement actions.
