ANNAPOLIS, MD (May 5, 1999) – A project to design and construct an extension of a sewer collection system in Harford County received Board of Public Works approval today for a $55,000 grant.

"This project will eliminate public health concerns about the local septic systems which are failing," said Governor Parris N. Glendening. "This improvement in an existing developed area is in keeping with our Smart Growth initiatives to target funding to existing developed areas."

The sewer extension will be located on Underwood Lane, which is west of Conowingo Road and south of Jarrettsville Road. In addition to the State grant, Harford County is contributing $137,900. Construction is expected to start in May and be completed this July.

"The members of the Harford County Delegation to the Maryland General Assembly fully support the State grant funding from the Supplemental Assistance Program for the Underwood Lane sewer project," said Rose Mary Halem Bonsack, chair of the Harford County delegation.

Chaired by Governor Glendening, the Board of Public Works also is composed of Comptroller William Donald Schaefer and Treasurer Richard N. Dixon. The Board is empowered by the General Assembly to approve construction and consultant contracts, equipment purchases, property transactions and other procurement actions.
