ANNAPOLIS, MD (September 29, 1999) – The Maryland Board of Public Works today approved a $100,000 grant increase for the Anacostia River Basin Wetlands Restoration project.

"Restoring our wetlands saves precious ecosystems, improves habitats for fish and wildlife, and reduces the risk of flooding for nearby residents," said Governor Parris N. Glendening. "These new 10 acres of wetlands on the Anacostia River will help preserve the river basin, and will enhance the quality of life for current and future Prince George's county families."

This project entails the design and creation of 10 acres of wetlands near the confluence of the Northeast and Northwest branches of the Anacostia River. The proposed wetlands will enhance wildlife habitat, create aquatic habitat, improve water quality and increase the aesthetic and environmental values in the Bladensburg area of Prince George’s County. A previous grant was for $135,000, and an additional $200,000 is expected to be requested for a total of $435,000. The project received a matching grant of $435,000 from Prince George’s County.

Chaired by Governor Glendening, the Board of Public Works also is comprised of Comptroller William Donald Schaefer and Treasurer Richard N. Dixon. The Board is empowered by the General Assembly to approve major construction and consultant contracts, equipment purchases, property transactions and other procurement actions.
