Who

The Maryland Department of the Environment (MDE) is hosting the 8th Annual “Rethink Recycling” Sculpture Contest. MDE Secretary Shari T. Wilson, Brian Sansoni of the Soap and Detergent Association, and Maryland Morning host Sheilah Kast will serve as judges to determine contest winners based on creativity, use of materials, and workmanship. First Lady Katie O’Malley is to present the awards. The event is sponsored by Best Buy, Constellation Energy, the MD, DE, DC Beverage Association, the Maryland Recyclers Network, Sharp Electronics Corporation, and the Soap and Detergent Association.

What

Every year MDE celebrates America Recycles Day (ARD) by hosting the “Rethink Recycling” Sculpture Contest and judging ceremony. High school students from across Maryland are invited to participate by creating sculptures made of recycled and used materials. Students create highly innovative and artistic sculptures made from a variety of materials such as metal, bottles, cans, milk jugs, cardboard, plastic bags, poker chips, tin foil, paper bags, etc. This year MDE expects more than 50 submissions from 19 schools.

Friday, November 13, 2009 10 a.m. to 12:45 p.m.
Sculptures will be on display starting at 10 a.m. The winners will be announced at 12:15 p.m.

Directions

From the North

Take I-95 South. Go through the Fort McHenry Tunnel. Exit at Exit 53 (I-395/Martin Luther King Boulevard). Follow signs to Martin Luther King Boulevard to the right. Get into the left lane after exiting. At the first traffic light, make a left onto Washington Boulevard. Follow Washington Boulevard for approximately one mile. Cross over Monroe Street. Make a right into the Red parking lot.

From the South

Take I-95 North. Exit at Exit 51 (Washington Boulevard). At bottom of the Exit ramp, make a left onto Washington Boulevard. Turn left onto the Red parking lot.
