(Baltimore, Maryland) May 6, 2009 - The Maryland Board of Public Works approved $2,744,772 in grants to reduce nitrogen and phosphorous to protect public health. The Board is comprised of Governor Martin O’Malley, Treasurer Nancy K. Kopp, and Comptroller Peter Franchot.

“It is critical that we continue to reduce pollution into the Chesapeake Bay,” said Governor Martin O’Malley. “Upgrading wastewater collection systems and wastewater treatment plants in critical to meeting our goals for the Bay.”

The following projects were approved in the following locations:

  • Thurmont Sewer Line Rehabilitation – Frederick County

    The $400,000 grant will rehabilitate the Town’s wastewater collection system, including the repair and/or replacement of defective sewer lines and manholes and the construction of ancillary facilities. This project will reduce the potential for sanitary sewer overflows and pollution to local streams, creeks, and rivers.

  • Perryville Wastewater Treatment Plant BNR/ENR Upgrade – Cecil County

    This $997,763 grant increase in addition to previous grants totaling $6,246,211, will fund construction of the BNR and ENR facilities at the existing Perryville Wastewater Treatment Plant to reduce nitrogen and phosphorous pollution into the Chesapeake Bay. Upon completion of the BNR and ENR upgrades, the Perryville WWTP will reduce total nitrogen by 83 percent and total phosphorous by 85 percent. These improvements will reduce nutrients discharged to the Susquehanna River and ultimately to the Chesapeake Bay.

  • George’s Creek Wastewater Treatment Plant BNR/ENR Upgrade – Allegany County

    This $158,888 grant increase in addition to previous grants of $19,406,031, will fund the planning, design, and construction to upgrade the existing George’s Creek Wastewater Treatment Plant. Upon completion of the BNR and ENR upgrades, the Georges Creek WWTP will reduce total nitrogen by 83 percent and total phosphorus by 85 percent. These improvements will reduce nutrients discharged to the Potomac River and ultimately the Chesapeake Bay.

  • Poolesville Wastewater Treatment Plant BNR/ENR Upgrade – Allegany County

    This $100,000 grant from the Bay Restoration Fund will fund the planning of wastewater treatment plant upgrade at the existing Poolesville Wastewater Treatment Plant. Upon completion of the BNR and ENR upgrades, the Poolesville WWTP will reduce total nitrogen by 83 percent and total phosphorous by 85 percent. These improvements will reduce nutrients discharged to the Potomac River and ultimately the Chesapeake Bay.

  • Rising Sun Wastewater Treatment Plant Lagoon Upgrade – Cecil County

    This $800,000 grant will fund the evaluation and design of the proposed upgrade for the Town of Rising Sun wastewater treatment plant lagoon system in order to meet the National Pollutants Discharge Elimination Permit (NPDES) effluent limits. The Town of Rising Sun in currently under a Consent Order to upgrade the lagoon system to comply with the NPDES permit requirements.

  • College of Southern Maryland and Mt. Carmel Woods Wastewater Treatment Plants– Charles County

    This $250,000 grant will fund the design and construction of two pumping stations and force mains to pump wastewater flows from two existing out-of-compliance wastewater treatment plants to the Mattawoman Wastewater Treatment Plant. This project will eliminate these two plants that are discharging inadequately treated sewage into tributaries of the Chesapeake Bay.

  • Montclair Manor Flood Control Project – Montgomery County

    This $38,121grant increase, in addition to a previous grant of $97,210, will provide for a levee along Joseph’s Branch to protect 12 townhouses in the Montclair Manor development and flood proof two single family residential housing units located in the area of Veirs Mill Road (MD 586), between Valleywood Drive and Claridge Road in Wheaton, Maryland.
