Mobile Sources Funding Sources

A variety of federal, state, and local organizations can provide assistance with the purchase of advanced technology vehicles, alternative fuels, and applicable infrastructure to help reduce emissions from mobile sources. The following list is not comprehensive and emphasizes funding most applicable to Maryland.

Grant and Loan Programs:

CMAQ (Congestion Mitigation and Air Quality) - The CMAQ program provides funds to State DOTs, MPOs, and transit agencies to invest in projects that reduce criteria air pollutants. Funding is available for areas that do not meet the National Ambient Air Quality Standards (nonattainment areas) as well as former nonattainment areas that are now in compliance (maintenance areas).


FTA (Federal Transit Administration) - The FTA has a summary of available funding for transportation related projects, both public and private.


MEA (Maryland Energy Administration) - The MEA provides funding for a variety of public and private projects within the state of Maryland. This includes funding for alternative fuel use within the state. The MEA also helps coordinate the US Department of Energy's Clean Cities Program within Maryland.

US DOE (Department of Energy) - The US DOE provides funding opportunities for advanced vehicle technology projects that are aimed at removing technical and cost barriers. The DOE also provides a list of incentives and laws aimed at reducing emissions.

  • The DOE Clean Cities Program helps to coordinate and fund emission reduction activities in participating cities.
